National Career College is proud to present the vocational nursing program, now open for registration for the spring 2016 semester. A degree in vocational nursing will teach the fundamental skills required in the health care industry, and equips students with the knowledge to succeed in the career.
What is vocational nursing?
A vocational nurse works directly under a registered nurse or doctor. Day to day duties can vary depending on work environment, but tasks include teaching family members proper care for sick relatives, assisting in infant care, collecting samples for tests, completing routine laboratory tests and more.
Where do vocational nurses work?
Vocational nursing is diverse, and can take place in a range of settings. Some places include hospitals, rehabilitation centers, nursing homes, home care agencies, outpatient clinics, surgery centers, doctor offices, dialysis centers, blood banks, psychiatric hospitals and more. The tasks involved may vary according to the particular work environment.
What skills do vocational nurses need?
Communication is one of the most relevant skills for a vocational nurse. A vocational nurse needs to listen well and communicate with patients and staff quickly and effectively. This position requires interacting with patients and cooperating with a team on a day-to-day basis, so it is important to have an interest in serving others. A vocational nurse needs to be detail-oriented, because the job involves giving a detailed report to the lead nurse or doctor which plays an important role in a patient’s diagnosis.
